How to Experience the Best Destin Sunset
A sunset is a time for reflection. The wanning sunlight gives way to the waxing darkness in a spectacular display of flamingo pinks, purples and oranges streaked across the sky. The great expanse of ocean heightens this display and mirrors its brilliance, adding lapping waves that lull ones senses and allow the mind to become tuned with nature's rhythms. Read: you RELAXXXX.
There are many ways to enjoy a sunset, and I'll share the ones that blow me away still after living here.
From Land
The classic standby, free of charge, is the beach walk at sunset with your toes in Destin's sugary sand. No matter what you do here, you must fit one of these in your vacation. Vacations are to stop and smell the roses, remember?
Some of my favorite places after the beach are climbing up on the east or west jetty to take in the calm. Bring a glass of wine or a friend, but definitely don't forget your sense of wonder and an uncluttered schedule so you can take advantage of the moment with a clear mind. Another way to give reverence to the end of the day is to celebrate the sunset over the Choctwhatchee Bay. I've seen the most brilliant, unobstructed sunsets from this vantage point. In addition, the calm bay water provides reprieve even when the Gulf surf is experiencing a mighty swell. Dewey Destin's at Crab Island by the Destin Marina has become an impromptu venue for small gatherings as dusk sets in Destin.
From Sea
Why watch a sunset over water when you can watch this glorious event from the water? Destin's waterways are unique in that the geography boasts a large, protected area called the Choctawhatchee Bay to host scenic sails to relax, and unite the patrons aboard. Experiencing a calm Choctawhatchee Bay sail after you return from an adventure in the Gulf of Mexico can't be beat. On your voyage through the Destin Pass to the Gulf, catch a glimpse of dolphins as they play, as well as large manta rays and turtles as they flip up in the waves. Finish the sailing excursion with a Destin sunset showcased by the calm waters along the less populated Okaloosa Island shores. Bring a bottle of wine or a 6-pack of Yuengling, or order some to-go from Marina Cafe and relax on the trampoline with dinner and drinks.
If ever there was a time for relaxation and connection, it is vacation. A time for jubilation and "to get away" from the cycles of work and domestic duties that often suppress the reflections and exuberance that the sun, sand, and ocean bubble up on vacation. Sunset sails are a great way to spend time with family or relax with friends on your Destin vacation. Do it on land or from water, just be sure you take the time to unwind while you are here with a beautiful Destin sunset.
